Come join us for 9 simultaneous wood and soda firings led by our featured artists.

Athens, OH

June 4-11, 2025

The Ohio University Ceramics Department will host the Ohio University Atmospherics Conference (OUAC). Come and experience nine simultaneously firings on our kiln pad. This hands-on conference provides an educational experience centered on atmospheric firings a process that involves introducing additives, such as wood and/or soda ash, into a kiln to create natural glazing effects on ceramics.

Led by featured artists, the firings will give attendees the opportunity to assist with kiln loading and participate in wood-firing shifts, ensuring a fully immersive experience. While the kilns are cooling, participants can attend demonstrations, lectures, and a gallery reception at the Canaanville Art Center. The event will conclude with kiln unloading, followed by a pottery sale that evening.

Participants may bring 15 - 25 pieces to fire in wood and soda kilns. Tall and skinny work is more likely to get in, as well as smaller pieces that can be placed around larger work. Work can vary in size, but generally keep in mind that larger forms come at the expense of the quantity of pieces you can bring, with maximum dimensions of 12” L x 12” W x 8.5” H. While most works will be fired, inclusion of all pieces cannot be guaranteed. Please make sure all works can withstand cone 10 temperatures with the exception of low fire soda withstanding cone 3. If applicable, all bare clay pieces must have flashing slip and liner glaze applied before arrival to expedite the loading process. A limited selection of glazes will be available on-site for exterior glazing.

While dorm housing and dining hall services are available for purchase, participants will be fully responsible for covering these costs.

More specific details about the OUAC will be sent out once participants have signed up for the event.

Admission is limited to 50 participants (30 student and 20 non-student). Cost of admission is $215 for students and $430 for non-students. (Lodging and food are not included). Once registration and payment are completed, an email will be sent on suggested clay, slip, and glaze recipes.
